Sylvia, Police brutality in Sierra Leone is not a new thing; the police are a law unto themselves. The sad truth is that we, as responsible citizens are not doing enough to stem this ugly fiesta of state sponsored brutality. Sure, your stance is a welcome beginning but that alone will not be enough. The way forward is to educate the entire mass of citizenry that it is their human right not to be manhandle and brutalised by the very people who are being paid with hard earn tax payer’s money to protect the public.
Last year a very senior colleague of mine at the Bar who happened to work for the law officer’s Dept (and who is also a member of some police human rights commission) was severely beaten for having a defect traffictor on his vehicle. They only came to know the person they have just beaten up when he was being booked prior to detention. The reason I mention this story is that police brutality only comes to the fore when some big fish or a relative of theirs got beaten up. We should be prepared to stand up to this nonsense regards less of who gets beaten. Thumbs up 1N1P.
